Nelson Bus Terminus

As part of its focus on developing Nelson City Centre, Nelson City Council resolved to relocate the existing bus hub from Bridge Street to Millers Acre. The growing eBus network had also pushed the Bridge Street terminus to capacity, while the location remained disconnected from other regional services.

The new Millers Acre Bus Interchange features six bus bays for eBus services, alongside provision for regional operators such as InterCity, local bus services, and tourist services travelling to Golden Bay and the National Parks.

Walkspace was involved in the project from the early concept stages all the way through to designing and preparing site furniture for manufacture and delivery.

Key furniture items included bespoke island seating elements fabricated from mild-steel galvanised subframes with Purpleheart timber slats. Set on precast-concrete plinths and positioned directly beside each bus bay, the seating provides convenient, short-term covered waiting areas.

Additional modular bench seating wraps around raised planters containing established trees with low level dense planting, providing outdoor seating away from the busy bus-bay terminus. Fabricated from mild steel with galvanised and powder-coated finishes, stainless-steel armrests, and Purpleheart timber slats, the benches provide overflow seating at peak times as well as places to gather and relax.

The indoor waiting also received the Walkspace treatment with a series of F_02 Mini Bench seats forming localised nested seating areas.

Our DF_02 Drinks fountain, BR_02 Bike Racks and BR_02 Bike Racks with tapping rails are employed throughout the site further encouraging active alternative forms of transport to and from the terminus.
