Walkspace worked with lead contractor Envirotech to detail design, supply and deliver bespoke precast concrete Cube Seats to Captain Springs Reserve in Onehunga. The site of a former train station, located at the busy corners of Church Street and Captain Springs Road, the pocket park designed by LA4 Landscape Architects, will now offer the neighbouring commercial and retail businesses a space to relax and eat lunch, a greenway through route and with effective native planting, encouraging native habitats for fauna.

The hollow precast cubes offer temporary seating set out in a communal manner as well as offering a sculptural element to the space. The use of bright and vibrant colours painted to the internal faces of each unit adds vibrancy and further enhances the environment. Cast offsite using steel moulds to maintain accuracy, the concrete received an F5 finish prior to the internal sections being primed and painted utilising concrete specific paint. Weighing in at a hefty 185kg per unit these perches aren’t going anywhere in a hurry and with a high Mpa rating they are built to last.

The cube seats were delivered by way of HIAB and placed into position, foundations marked, drilled, and hold down bolts fitted and secured. The entire installation process took no longer than 2 hours to complete for all 8 units.
